Dyslexia Assessment

Dyslexia assessments evaluate reading, writing, and related skills to diagnose dyslexia and provide strategies for support.

Dyslexia assessments aim to:

  • Identify specific reading and language processing challenges.

  • Distinguish dyslexia from other learning difficulties.

  • Provide a foundation for tailored interventions and accommodations.

Assessments can be conducted at 8 years old, though early evaluation (in preschool or early elementary years) is often ideal. Early identification enables timely interventions, which can mitigate the long-term effects of dyslexia.

  • Phonological Awareness: Measures the ability to identify and manipulate sounds in words, a core area affected in dyslexia.

  • Decoding Skills: Evaluates the ability to apply letter-sound knowledge to read unfamiliar words.

  • Reading Fluency and Accuracy: Assesses the speed and precision of reading text.

  • Reading Comprehension: Tests understanding of written text.

  • Spelling and Writing: Examines spelling patterns and written language organization.

  • Cognitive Skills: Includes memory, attention, and processing speed to identify underlying issues.

  • Family and Educational History: Helps determine if there is a hereditary link or environmental factors contributing to challenges.

  • Standardised Tests: Administered by specialists, such as:

    • Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP).

Who can carry out a dyslexia assessment?

Only trained professionals, like an Educational Psychologist, can conduct the assessment.

How much does a dyslexia assessment cost?

The cost can vary, but it is generally around £600 or more.

How can a dyslexia assessment help a child?

Diagnosis if dyslexia is present. A formal diagnosis entitles a child to extra support, including access to funding for helpful tools, depending on their age and where they live. Can highlight specific areas of strength and weakness. Gives recommendations for instructional strategies, accommodations (e.g. extra time on exams) and tools (e.g. text-to-speech software). It can also identify other related learning difficulties, such as dysgraphia, dyscalculia, or dyspraxia.

Many dyslexic children are highly intelligent and merely struggle with particular teaching methods.

Dyslexic people can be very creative, natural problem solvers, excel in areas of spatial awareness and pattern recognition - so lets work to their strengths!
